Jim McKenna Medal

The Jim McKenna Medal is awarded annually to the player adjudged the fairest and best in the SMCA First Grade competition. This prestigious honour recognises outstanding individual performance, sportsmanship, and consistency throughout the season.

Since the 2009–10 season, the recipient has been determined by a 3-2-1 voting system, with points allocated by the match umpires after each game.

Jim McKenna was a cornerstone of community cricket in Perth’s southern suburbs, contributing tirelessly as a player, administrator, and mentor over more than five decades. He began his cricketing journey with the Kenwick Cricket Club, playing in its inaugural season in 1949 in the former South Suburban Cricket Association (SSCA). His family played a pivotal role in the club’s foundation — his father Bert McKenna was the club’s founder, and his brother Bob McKenna served as its foundation secretary.

In the 1960s, Jim became actively involved in the administration of the SSCA, holding various executive roles over the next 40 years. In 1996, he was appointed the first President of the newly formed South Metropolitan Cricket Association (SMCA), helping guide the merger and shaping the future of the competition. His contributions were recognised with Life Membership of both the Kenwick Cricket Club and the SSCA/SMCA.

Beyond cricket, Jim was a dedicated school teacher, retiring as Western Australia’s longest-serving teacher. His service to sport was acknowledged nationally with the Sports Australia Medal. Jim also had a passion for travel and classical music, reflecting his wide interests and generous spirit.

Jim McKenna passed away on 10 October 2003, after a long battle with skin cancer — poignantly, on the same day Matthew Hayden scored his then world-record Test score of 380 at the WACA.

The Jim McKenna Medal, awarded to the fairest and best player in SMCA First Grade, stands as a lasting tribute to a man who gave so much to the game.
